Event Recap and Photos from our Untitled Open Mic and IMPROV SLAM ft. 5 Fingers of Death | 8.3.22
Tonight’s improv slam was a smorgasbord of synonyms, a veritable myriad of metaphors, a cacophony of creativity. Each poet truly brought their A-game to the mic and stayed sharp in each round, even when presented with most unusual props to riff off of. Lauren’s poem self association with the proffered traffic cone and Chris’ jumper cable japes sealed their positions as first and second place respectively, by audience acclaim. Max and Aaron also provided beautifully crafted appraisals of their selected props (a piece of driftwood, and a dusty copy of an encyclopedia respectively). Even the audience and the scorekeeper were not exempt from the improvisational challenge, given such criteria to score with as “elevation",” most successful pickup line,” and “constellation of the heart.” To which, of course, the scorekeeper (Rikhav) had to amalgamate the judges responses into phrases as “the brilliant momentary blaze of light in the night sky before a star blinks out of existence” and “the crisp sensation of the perfectly mixed drink as it slips down your esophagus, releasing your inhibitions.”
In the end, the audience stayed engaged throughout the event and overall, the exercise in improvisation proved in unequivocal success.
